Home Wireless Network: How do wireless networks work

Wireless networks work by two different methods. One method is known as ‘access point’ or ‘infrastructure’. Basically in this method each user’s computer will connect to the central router for sharing files or an Internet connection. The router acts as the central portal through which all network communications propagate. The other method is known ‘computer-to-computer’ or ‘ad-hoc’. This process involves two devices establishing a wireless link directly for communication, without the use of an access point such as a router. This is also known as peer to peer mode. This mode is useful for establishing a network where a wireless infrastructure does not exist or where services are not required.
